I just scanned this 4x5 negative of Governor Hoff. My Grandfather took it years ago. What a cool find in his archives!
Very cool history on him….
Philip Henderson Hoff (1924–2018) served as the 73rd Governor of Vermont from 1963 to 1969, making history as the state’s first Democratic governor since 1853.
He won election in 1962 by running an energetic campaign against the incumbent Republican, capitalizing on a split between Vermont’s conservative and progressive Republicans, and was aided by the national popularity of President John F. Kennedy.
During his six years in office, he helped launch Vermont’s environmental movement, focused on reducing pollution, pushed for education reform, and helped revamp the state’s judicial system. He was also the first Democratic Governor in the nation to break with President Lyndon Johnson over the Vietnam War, and later campaigned for Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential bid.
Hoff is widely credited with beginning Vermont’s transformation from one of the most Republican-entrenched states in the country to one of the most liberal.
